4WD track in the Southland region
A short beach run along the tidal coast at Papatowai, in the Catlins region of Southland. The route follows the sand below the high-tide line, so timing your run with the tides is essential before heading through. There's a river along the way; while many won't attempt it, crossing it is possible and will extend the beach run considerably. Do so at your own risk and only with good judgement of conditions. The Catlins setting is wild and scenic, with the rugged Southland coastline making this a memorable stretch of driving. The beach itself makes an awesome spot to pull up for lunch and take in the surroundings. Keep a close eye on the tide for the whole time you're down here, as the window can close quickly and there's limited margin for error on a tidal beach. A rewarding short detour for those exploring the wider Catlins coast.
