4WD track in the Gisborne region
Otipi Road is a scenic, heavily overgrown 4WD climb into Gisborne's Raukumara Ranges, with a Motu River ford, big valley views and quad-track terrain.
Built in 1952 after the Motu River was proposed as a hydro dam site, Otipi Road runs into the Raukumara Ranges in the Gisborne region. From the campsite you ford the Motu River and follow the old road as it climbs to around 960 m, traces the ridgeline, then descends steeply back towards the river.
This is a scenic, rocky climb rewarded with sweeping views over the valley and plenty of birdsong. The route is heavily overgrown throughout, with gorse, vines and low-hanging trees, so expect bush rash and take real care if you're running a rooftop tent or awning. Much of it has the feel of a narrow quad-bike track, with a few genuine challenges along the way, including a notable section at the very bottom.
Come well prepared with a chainsaw and recovery gear such as a winch. Note that we covered around half of this road, and the grade is based on what we drove.
