This easy beach drive takes in a short section of Otaki Beach on the Kapiti Coast, north of Wellington. The route runs along firm sand, with a stream crossing that's usually shallow over a hard sand bottom. It's a relaxed cruise with open coastal views, but the beach demands respect: the tide comes in a long way, soft patches and worm holes can catch drivers out, and vehicles have been lost to the sea here. Sticking closer to the drier sand is the safer line, and conditions can soften considerably after a storm. Keep an eye on tide times and don't venture out beyond your comfort level.
Note the access rules: do not head south or into the Waitohu Reserve area, as both are off limits to vehicles. A short, scenic outing best suited to those who keep their wits about the changing sand and incoming tide.
