4WD track in the Southland region
Oreti Beach is a wide, hard-packed sand drive west of Invercargill in Southland, one of the few South Island beaches you can drive on.
Right at the bottom of the country, just west of Invercargill, this is one of the few beaches you can actually drive on in the South Island. Open ocean on one side, rolling dunes on the other, and a wide breezy stretch of sand to cruise along at the southern edge of the mainland.
The sand here is genuinely hard-packed and holds up well, so it's an easy, relaxed drive with straightforward access. Most vehicles will be fine when conditions are right. People have got on close to high tide, though it still works best around lower water. Keep an eye on the tides regardless.
There's a 30kmph limit on the beach, so watch your speed and other beach users. Stay out of the dunes too, since there are birds and plants in there that need the space. A popular, welcoming spot for an easy beach run.
