The Old Woman Range Track sits in the Kopuwai Conservation Area in Central Otago, a remote high-country gold-mining trail that climbs to around 1750m. It's best driven in dry summer conditions with a 4WD, and ideally in convoy with at least two vehicles—help is rare and there's little to no mobile coverage in places. The route is rough and slow going, with rocky steep pitches, deep ruts and a few boggy holes (some with optional bypass lines); ground off the formed track is swampy, so it pays to stay on the track. This is no shingle road, and the barren tops mean there are no trees to winch from. The reward is the scenery: the views improve as you go, opening to panoramic vistas across Central Otago, with an old mountain hut near the summit worth a look. The track links to Old Man Range and Nevis Road routes, and is generally easier on the Bannockburn side and more technical toward the Garston end. Come prepared for cold, fast-changing weather even in summer.
