High in Central Otago, the Old Man Range climbs to over 1682 metres, treating you to spectacular and diverse scenic vistas of rugged mountain terrain and the region's unique high-country landscapes. The route is a steep climb and descent, but the road up the mountain is fairly straightforward, with some travellers noting it could even be done in 2WD in good conditions. The northern side drops down towards Piano Flat, where the tracking gets rougher and more rutty. Expect conditions to vary widely up here, from dry and clear to foggy with limited visibility, so always check the weather forecast before attempting. The exposed tops can be very different from the descent, and it's worth considering travelling with a second vehicle. A consistently highly rated, scenic high-country drive that rewards the effort with unforgettable views from the top.
