4WD track in the Canterbury region
Old Le Bons Track is a steep, rutted Banks Peninsula climb through private land near Le Bons Bay, with big peninsula views and a winch-worthy rock step.
A bumpy, slippery climb up Banks Peninsula, not far from Le Bons Bay. Private land sits on both sides, so leave gates as you found them and stay on the track. Get to the top and you're looking out over the whole peninsula, which is the payoff for the work to get there.
The going is steep and increasingly rutted, deep enough that lower vehicles can belly out and clip diffs and undercarriage. There's at least one set of rock steps that may call for a winch, and some sections are overgrown, so expect a few scratches and bush rash. A lift, decent tyres and lockers all help, and the bigger rigs tend to run mud tyres, with recent runs needing 35s.
Probably manageable in summer when dry, but it turns into a proper mission in winter and gets very slippery after rain. Best tackled dry in a capable, well set-up 4WD.
