Old Le Bons Track is a bumpy, slippery climb on Banks Peninsula in Canterbury, near Le Bons Bay. There's private land on both sides, so leave gates as you found them and don't stray off the track. Those who reach the top are rewarded with a stunning view over the peninsula.

The going is steep and increasingly rutted, deep enough that lower vehicles can belly out and clip diffs and undercarriage. There's at least one set of rock steps that may call for a winch, and some sections are overgrown, so expect a few scratches and bush rash. A lift, decent tyres and lockers all help, and the bigger rigs tackling it tend to run mud tyres.

It's probably manageable in summer when dry, but turns into a serious mission in winter, with very slippery going after rain. Best tackled dry and come prepared for a proper climb in a capable, well set-up 4WD.
