4WD track in the Canterbury region
Okuku River is a short, rugged Canterbury 4WD run through braided river country with repeated crossings that shift with the river and reward careful line choice.
A short, rugged run through braided river country in inland Canterbury, following the Okuku riverbed and linking through to the bridge at one end. Open gravel flats and the constantly shifting waters of the Okuku give it a no-frills feel.
The river crossings are what define it. You'll dart across the water several times, and the deeper ones can reach headlight height, though there's usually an alternate line over the river. Because the Okuku moves its course about, the track changes from season to season and crossings can develop soft, deep spots, so scout before you commit and walk the crossings first.
The going is bumpy and slow, so airing down to around 18psi makes for a more comfortable ride. Best tackled when the river is lower and settled, and it rewards careful line choice. Worth keeping in mind that the route can change enough between visits that you may not get all the way through.
