Branching off SH38, the Waikaremoana Road, about 7.5km from its western end, Okahu Road runs for around 10km of undulating gravel and dirt with several water crossings along the way. The condition of those crossings varies with recent rain and how recently the track has been maintained. This is an easygoing route through peaceful native bush, beloved for its scenery and the absolute quiet — just the streams, birdsong and the occasional honey bee for company. Keep an eye out for the wild horses that roam the area, and trout in some of the streams. There are several spots for basic camping, with toilets at some, plus plenty of side tracks worth poking your nose into and some good walks. A relaxed, scenic cruise rather than a technical challenge — bring insect repellent for the bugs. Many travellers continue down the gravel highway out toward the east coast.
