4WD track in the Canterbury region
Ohau Ski Field road is a steep, unsealed Mackenzie Country climb into the Ben Ohau Range, with big tussock high-country and basin views.
Like a lot of South Island ski field roads, it's steep and twisty, with an average grade of around 10%, so make sure your cooling system is up to it before you head up.
The payoff is the view. Sweeping outlooks over the tussock high country and across the Mackenzie Basin, and they only get better the higher you go. It's an unsealed mountain road that wants a capable vehicle and a bit of respect, especially on the tighter switchbacks.
The road shuts at times through the year, so worth checking before you set off if this is your only destination. Good drive if you're chasing alpine scenery away from the crowds.
