Ohau Ski Field road

4WD track in the Canterbury region

Ohau Ski Field road is a steep, twisty unsealed climb into Canterbury's Ben Ohau Range, with sweeping views over the tussock high country and Mackenzie Basin.

This is the access road to the Ohau Ski Field, tucked into the Ben Ohau Range in the Mackenzie Country of inland Canterbury. Like many South Island ski field roads, it's steep and twisty, climbing with an average grade of around 10%, so make sure your cooling system is in good shape before you tackle it.

The reward is the view: sweeping outlooks over the tussock high country and across the Mackenzie Basin, which only get better as you gain altitude. It's an unsealed mountain road that demands respect and a capable vehicle, particularly on the tighter switchbacks.

Keep in mind that the road is closed at times through the year, so it's worth checking before you head up if this is your only destination. A rewarding drive for those chasing alpine scenery away from the crowds.
