Tucked into the ranges of Central Otago, the Obelisk track is a popular and relatively easy scenic run that climbs to its namesake landmark — a remarkable 27 metre rock formation that will have you wondering how it ever got there. From the high country you'll be rewarded with stunning views across Central Otago, out toward Alexandra and the surrounding basin. The route can be approached from the Fruitlands side and makes a worthwhile detour on any trip through the area. Expect a straightforward 4WD drive with several gates along the way, so be ready to hop out and open and close them as you go. One thing to keep in mind: it sits at altitude and stays cold up top even on a warm, sunny day, so pack warm gear no matter the season. It's a great spot to bring visitors who want big views without a demanding drive, and the obelisk itself is a genuinely distinctive payoff at the top.
