Obelisk

4WD track in the Otago region

Obelisk is an easy, scenic Central Otago 4WD climb to a 27m rock formation, with big views over Alexandra and the basin and a few gates along the way.

Up in the ranges of Central Otago, this is a popular climb to the Obelisk itself, a 27 metre rock formation that has you wondering how it ever ended up there. From the high country the views open right out across Central Otago, out toward Alexandra and the surrounding basin.

Most people come up from the Fruitlands side. It's a fairly easy 4WD run, no real demands, but there are three or four gates along the way, so be ready to hop out and open and close them as you go.

Worth knowing it sits at altitude and stays cold up top even on a warm, sunny day, so pack warm gear whatever the season. A good one for bringing visitors who want big views without a hard drive, and the obelisk makes a genuinely distinctive payoff at the top.
