Natural Hot Pools

4WD track in the Canterbury region

(10)

A worthwhile short side track off the road out to Scotties Hut in Canterbury, dropping down into the valley to a set of natural hot pools tucked deep among the bush. It's a step up in complexity from the main track: a steep initial climb leads in, where low range is ideal, and the final drop-downs to the pools demand good ground clearance and decent approach and departure angles. The route is short but characterful, and the walk down to the pools from the carpark takes only about 2 minutes. The pools themselves are warm and a little mossy, and there's room for a few tents nearby. Bring a towel and togs, and follow the little trail downstream to find the hotter pools. A bucket to mix in cooler river water helps dial in the temperature. Sandflies are fierce here, especially when there's no breeze, so pack plenty of bug spray. A magical spot well worth the detour.
