4WD track in the Canterbury region
Natural Hot Pools is a short, challenging Canterbury side track off the Scotties Hut road, dropping to warm bush-clad pools with room for a few tents.
Branching off the road out to Scotties Hut, this short side track drops down into the valley to a set of natural hot pools tucked deep among the bush. It's a clear step up in complexity from the main track, and well worth the detour.
A steep initial climb leads in, where low range is ideal. That climb gets rough and rutted over time, so pick your line carefully. The final drop-downs to the pools want good ground clearance with decent approach and departure angles.
The pools themselves are warm and a little mossy, with room for a few tents nearby. Bring a towel and togs, and follow the little trail downstream to find the hotter pools. A bucket to mix in cooler river water helps dial in the temperature. Sandflies are fierce here when there's no breeze, so pack plenty of bug spray.
A magical spot. Drive considerately - wheelspin and torn-up tracks are how places like this end up closed.
