4WD track in the Tasman region
Mt Patriarch is a long, steady Tasman climb to epic views over Lake Chalice, easy going until a narrow final 2km alongside a sheer drop.
A long, steady climb that pays off with big views out over Lake Chalice and the valleys dropping away below. On a clear day the outlook from the top is genuinely epic, and plenty of drivers reckon the trip is worth it for the scenery alone.
For most of its length it's easy going. The lower section as far as the Lake Chalice car park is gentle enough that some have made it that far in a 2WD. The character changes for the final 2km, where the track narrows and runs alongside a sheer drop on one side, so take it slow and stay within the route shown on the app.
Being a high climb, the upper section can get icy in winter, so pick your weather and watch your footing near the summit. There are sharp surfaces in places too, so mind your tyres. A good trip for the views, with a final stretch that suits a confident, careful driver.
