Mt Dick Lookout

4WD track in the Wellington region

Mt Dick Lookout is a short, steep gravel climb near Mangatarere Valley in Wellington, with an easy run up to a big summit panorama.

(12)

A short gravel climb up to the top of Mt Dick with a big panorama waiting at the summit. Part of the way up the track shares its route with a mountain bike trail.

The driving is easy and chilled but genuinely steep, and the surface gets corrugated. It's a narrow, one-lane two-way track that's tight for passing, so take it slowly and keep an eye out for oncoming vehicles.

Most vehicles will manage it, and the reward at the top is worth the trip. Pick a clear day for the full effect, though plenty of people reckon the view is still great even when it's overcast or foggy. The lookout is also a launch spot for paragliders and hang gliders, so you might catch a few taking off.
