Mt Dick Lookout is a short gravel climb in the Wellington region, near Mangatarere Valley, leading to a summit with a spectacular panorama. The track shares part of its route with a mountain bike trail on the way to the top of Mt Dick.

The driving is easy and chilled but genuinely steep, and the surface can be corrugated. It's a narrow, one-lane two-way track that gets tight for passing, so take it slowly and watch for oncoming vehicles. Airing down helps smooth out the corrugations, and in an automatic, 4WD low range is handy on the descent so you're not riding the brakes the whole way.

Suitable for most vehicles, the reward at the top is well worth it. Pick a clear day for the full effect, though plenty of people report the view is still great even when it's overcast or foggy. The lookout is also a launch spot for paragliders and hang gliders, so you may catch a few taking off.
