4WD track in the Canterbury region
Mt Aspiring Access Road is an easy Canterbury gravel run through alpine valleys, with shallow fords and short walks to a waterfall and the Rob Roy Glacier.
A gravel road that threads deep into the Mt Aspiring valleys, with phenomenal mountain views and the kind of moody Southern Alps skies that make the drive on their own.
The road earns its reputation with heavy corrugations, especially towards the far end, so airing down makes for a far more comfortable trip. Several shallow fords cross the route. They're straightforward in fine weather but can rise quickly to river levels after rain, so check the forecast before you head out. Winter travel calls for chains.
The real payoff is near the end of the road, where short walks lead to a waterfall. Don't let the rental cars put you off, the alpine scenery alone is worth the drive out.
