Mavora Lakes to Boundary Hut

4WD track in the Otago region

Mavora Lakes to Boundary Hut is an Otago 4WD track along North Mavora Lake, with beech forest, tussock, clear river crossings and big valley views.

(3)

Running along the eastern side of North Mavora Lake and climbing into the valley toward Boundary Hut, this is a well-loved track that starts in beech forest north of the campground before breaking out into open tussock country. There are plenty of puddles and clear river crossings to splash through. Past Carries Hut the valley widens beyond the end of the lake, opening up big views up toward Boundary Hut.

You'll need the gate code from DOC before heading in, so sort it out while you still have reception. The gate is an access control to reduce pressure on the area, so please stay on the track. It wouldn't take much to see it permanently closed, which would be a real shame.

Expect a bumpy ride and a fair bit of bush rash from overgrowth, enough that some drivers protective of fresh paint turn back. All-terrain tyres and lower pressures are worth considering. The track varies a lot with weather and lake level, so be ready to make your own adventure. Vehicles aren't permitted beyond the hut, so please don't push on.
