4WD track in the Tasman region
Maungatapu Track in Tasman is a scenic climb from Pelorus Bridge to a saddle, with old Nelson history, big views and a small 4WD playground up top.
Up in the hills above the Tasman and Marlborough boundary, this one climbs from near Pelorus Bridge up to a saddle. There's a slice of old Nelson history along the way, so keep an eye out for 'Murders Corner'. The views from the top are the real payoff, and there's a small 4WD playground to muck about in once you reach the saddle.
Mostly an easy, scenic climb that any decent 4x4 will handle, though you'll meet loose, slightly rutted sections. A steeper rutted pinch around the three-quarter mark can catch vehicles out, so airing down helps a lot here. Some drivers cross right over to the Maitai side on the Nelson end and back, others just head up and return the same way.
The Nelson side needs a registered permit and access key from Nelson City Council, with a refundable key hire to get through. It's popular with cyclists and walkers, so move through at a sensible pace. Worth the drive up for the views alone.
