Manukapua Island, also known as Sand Island or Big Sand Island, sits in the Kaipara Harbour in the Auckland Region, near Tāpora on the Okahukura Peninsula. This is a sand-driving destination with rewarding harbour views, open beach and expansive dunes to explore, all wrapped in the remote feel of a Kaipara sand island.

The track itself is a fun and relatively easy drive, though 4WD is essential as the sand is soft in places. Adventurous drivers have circled the entire island and found hidden trails winding through the dunes along the shore.

Tides are the key consideration here: aim to be on the island around 2 hours either side of high tide, but always use common sense and keep an eye on the water. The combination of easygoing terrain, big beach scenery and a bit of tidal planning make it a great family-friendly outing for those with the right vehicle.
