Manukapua Island

4WD track in the Auckland region

Manukapua Island is a remote Kaipara Harbour sand-driving spot near Tapora, with open beach, dunes and harbour views for capable 4WDs working the tides.

Out in the Kaipara Harbour, off the Okahukura Peninsula near Tāpora, sits a low sand island with a properly remote feel to it. Manukapua, also known as Sand Island or Big Sand Island, is all open beach, dunes and wide harbour views.

The driving is good fun and fairly easy going, but you'll want 4WD for sure as the sand goes soft in places. Some drivers have circled the whole island and found hidden trails winding through the dunes along the shore, so there's a bit to explore if you're up for it.

Tides are the thing to plan around here. Aim to be on the island within about 2 hours either side of high tide, and keep half an eye on the water the whole time. With the easy terrain and big beach scenery, it's a good family outing as long as you've got the right vehicle under you.
