4WD track in the Taranaki region
Mangaopapa Road is an easy gravel run off Taranaki's Forgotten World Highway, with a hand-cut unlined rock tunnel as the highlight.
Branching off the Forgotten World Highway in the remote inland country, this is an easy, mostly gravel run through rolling bush and farmland. The road's wide and a little bumpy in places, but nothing that'll trouble most vehicles.
The highlight is the unlined tunnel near the highway end, one of the traditional hand-cut tunnels you find through this part of the country. Carved straight through the rock and left unlined, it's a genuinely impressive thing to drive through and worth the short detour on its own.
A relaxed one if you're poking around the wider Forgotten World Highway area and want a quiet side trip.
