Out in the back country of inland Hawke's Bay, this is an easy scenic gravel drive that finishes at the natural Mangatutu Hot Springs. The road's decent gravel for the most part, passing through private property in places, so stay on the track to respect the landowners.

Expect a few sharp corners and the usual character of a public access road, with some corrugations, potholes and ruts to keep an eye on. There's one river crossing over low concrete slabs, usually shallow, plus two bridges with optional river crossings alongside them. Two-wheel-drive cars regularly make it up here, but a 4WD smooths things out.

The payoff is a soak in the natural hot pools at the end, hard to beat after the drive in. The camp area up top is well regarded and allows freedom camping for both tents and vehicles, so it's a good spot to pitch up for the night. If you've got time, Whittle Road nearby is worth a look on the way past.
