Tucked into the back country of inland Hawke's Bay, this is a popular and genuinely easy scenic drive out to the natural Mangatutu Hot Springs. The route follows decent gravel road, passing through private property in places, so stay on the track. Expect a few sharp corners and the typical character of a public access road: some corrugations, potholes and ruts to keep an eye on. There's one river crossing over low concrete slabs, usually shallow, plus two bridges with optional river crossings alongside them. Two-wheel-drive cars regularly make it up here, but a 4WD certainly helps smooth things out. The real reward waits at the end: a soak in the natural hot pools, hard to beat after the drive in. The camp area up top is well regarded and allows freedom camping for both tents and vehicles, making it a great spot to stay the night. If you've got time, Whittle Road nearby is worth a look on the way past.
