Mahuta Gap

4WD track in the Northland region

(1)

Mahuta Gap is one of several access routes down onto Ripiro Beach on Northland's west coast. Of the entrances onto this long stretch of sand, it's among the more interesting and enjoyable to drive. The track has a sand base with a river running over it, so AWD or 4WD is recommended to make the crossing comfortably. It's a fun run rated around medium difficulty, suitable for those wanting a bit more character than a straightforward beach entry. Once on the sand, Mahuta Gap connects with other Ripiro Beach access points, including the route up towards Baylys Beach, so it can form part of a longer coastal drive. Keep a close eye on the tide when planning any beach travel here, as timing is everything for getting around safely. The setting is classic Northland west coast: open sand, surf, and big skies, with the beach stretching well in both directions.
