Macetown

4WD track in the Otago region

Macetown is an iconic Otago 4WD track above Arrowtown with 20+ Arrow River crossings, cliff-edge sections and historic gold-mining ruins.

(49)

Nestled in the rugged hills above Arrowtown in Otago, Macetown is a goldmine of adventure—literally and figuratively. This iconic 4WD track is famous for its 20+ river crossings each way, following the Arrow River through a valley ringed by dramatic mountains and ending at the historic, abandoned gold-mining town of Macetown. Established during the late 19th century Otago gold rush, the once-bustling settlement is now a fascinating open-air museum of stone ruins and relics, with a short walk to restored buildings and interpretation panels.

After most crossings the track narrows to one-vehicle-wide with steep drop-offs of 100m or more to the river, so passing oncoming traffic takes care. The second half gets scratchy, so expect some bush rash, especially in wide vehicles. River levels rise quickly after rain, so always check the Arrow River flow before heading out—in high water crossings can go over the bonnet, and a snorkel and careful line choice are advised.

There are excellent overnight camping spots with stunning views, though sandflies and mozzies can be fierce—bring serious repellent. There's no cell reception on the track. A DOC gate and paid permit system is now in place, so register and pay online before you arrive. Leave no trace to preserve this special place.
