Lake Onslow Road

4WD track in the Otago region

Lake Onslow Road is a remote Otago gravel route climbing through tussock and farmland to the lake, a workable medium-grade drive for capable 4WDs.

(1)

Out in the rolling hill country of inland Otago, this gravel and dirt route winds its way up to Lake Onslow and on to various spots around the area. It links the Deep Creek Road end with the Roxburgh end, and the scenery shifts a fair bit as you go.

The Deep Creek Road end starts off rough and rocky before giving way to hillier, more workable country. Exotic tree plantings change to grey tussock paddocks and then a patchwork of green farmland. Around the dam at the lake there's a cluster of substantial huts and cribs, and you'll likely share the road with cattle ranging across some seriously big paddocks.

The road's generally well maintained, especially along the Lake-to-Roxburgh end, so it's a workable medium-grade drive. It is genuinely remote out this way though, so come prepared with supplies, fuel and the gear to look after yourself.
