Lake Onslow Road is a remote, rough gravel and dirt route through the rolling Otago hills, climbing up to Lake Onslow and on to various other spots in the area. The scenery shifts dramatically as you travel: the Deep Creek Road end is a rough, rocky landscape that gives way to hillier, more workable country, with exotic tree plantings changing to grey tussock paddocks and then a patchwork of green farmland. Substantial huts and cribs cluster around the dam at the lake, and you'll likely share the road with healthy cattle ranging across vast paddocks. The road is generally well maintained, particularly along the Lake-to-Roxburgh end, making for a workable medium-grade drive. As with anywhere out this way, it's genuinely remote, so come prepared with supplies, fuel and the gear to be self-sufficient.
