Lake Ohau Road

4WD track in the Otago region

Lake Ohau Road is an easy Mackenzie country gravel run along the lake, ending in minor stream crossings before the Hopkins track turnoff.

(5)

Out in the Mackenzie country, this easy gravel road runs along the western shore of Lake Ohau and up into the valley toward the Hopkins Valley turnoff. The lakeside section is straightforward and fine for any vehicle, with views over the lake the whole way.

Near the end the road runs alongside the riverbed before becoming the Hopkins track. This last stretch has a few minor technicals and stream crossings, though plenty of people get through in a wagon, let alone a proper 4WD. A winding, scenic drive, and one of the better lakeside and valley runs around here.

There are campgrounds along the way, but they get very exposed when the wind picks up, so keep that in mind if you're pitching up for the night. Allow around 40 minutes one way from the highway turnoff to the end. Good one for a relaxed explore with reliable scenery throughout.
