4WD track in the Canterbury region
Lake Emma is a short, easy gravel 4WD track in the Canterbury high country with quiet lake views and an old hut you can camp by at the end.
Up in the high country near Lake Clearwater and Lake Camp, this one stays a lot quieter than its better-known neighbours, mostly because you can only get in by 4WD. The lake views are the drawcard, and people who make the trip out keep rating it highly.
The track is short, straightforward gravel running around the side of the lake. Easy-going driving with no bush rash, so it's a good one to take your time over on a fine day. Follow it right to the end and you'll reach an old hut, where there's a flat spot to pitch a tent if you fancy a night out there.
The section past the car park closes over winter (18 May to 25 October), so plan around the open season. Stay on the track and it'll stay open for everyone.
