4WD track in the Otago region
Kyeburn Track is a rough Otago high-country route along a ridge beneath Mount Kyeburn, with rocky going and bog holes, suited to capable 4WDs.
Up in the high country of Oteake Conservation Park, this one gives you a more challenging way down off the hills. The route follows a rugged line along a 1,560-metre ridge beneath Mount Kyeburn, with sweeping views before it drops towards Danseys Pass Road.
Expect slow, rough going for much of the way, with large rocks, bumpy sections and bog holes. The bog holes generally have firm gravel and rock bottoms so you won't sink in, but they carry ruts, so it's best avoided on tyres smaller than 30s. Rated medium to hard depending on the section, and the narrow ridge bits want a bit of care. The initial ascent gets slippery after rain, so pick your day.
Near the summit a track leads to a platform area just below the peak. The steep 4WD spur that climbs to the crest dead-ends, so don't bother with it. Buster Hut sits near the route but is basic, with effectively one bed.
There's a seasonal closure from 30 April to 25 October, and all vehicles must stay on formed, marked tracks to protect the park.
