Kohioawa Beach

4WD track in the Bay of Plenty region

Kohioawa Beach is a soft-sand beach drive in the Bay of Plenty, offering stunning views out across the bay. It's a great place to stop and set up for a day of fishing or just hanging out at the beach with the family. The sand here is genuinely soft, so vehicles do get stuck from time to time — bring recovery gear and air down before heading on. Note that the tide comes right up to the dunes, so keep an eye on the water and plan your run accordingly. Up top, a dune track runs along behind the beach and is a good option for finding a spot to camp up for the day, with a few side tracks worth exploring. If you'd prefer an easier alternative, Thornton Beach up the road is a softer-going option. Worth checking out on your way through.
