Kennedy Bay

4WD track in the Coromandel region

(1)

A scenic, mostly gravel road that winds through the hills out to Kennedy Bay in the Coromandel. It makes a handy back route to Waikawau without having to go via Colville, with many drivers preferring it to the Colville route for its easy, picturesque character. Near the top of the pass there's a short walk up to the summit, rewarding you with views over Coromandel and out to Rangitoto. The terrain is straightforward and well suited to an easy day trip rather than technical four-wheel driving. Being a link road, it can get busy at times, especially around the Christmas period when you'll share it with cars and trailers, so keep left and watch out for oncoming traffic.
