4WD track in the Canterbury region
Kaitorete Spit is a flat Canterbury coastal drive on gravel between Lake Ellesmere and the Pacific, with big dune and ocean views.
A long, narrow finger of land separating Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora) from the Pacific southwest of Banks Peninsula. It's a distinctive coastal spot of dune systems and exposed shoreline, with big sky views across the lake on one side and open ocean on the other.
The main route is a decent gravel road that runs the length of the spit, with offshoots that look like they head down toward the beach. Flat and open driving rather than anything technical, so good for a poke around one of the more unusual landforms in these parts.
Worth knowing this one's only partly explored, so the full extent and condition of the side tracks toward the beach is uncertain. It gets exposed and windy out here, so come prepared for the open coast.
