Jackson River Road

4WD track in the Southland region

Jackson River Road is a remote Southland gravel route following the Jackson River through wide valleys, an easy scenic drive into isolated country.

(1)

Out at the far southern edge of the West Coast, this gravel road takes you about as deep into remote country as you can get on the South Island. It runs mostly along the Jackson River, through wide valleys and bush-clad surrounds.

The surface is gravel the whole way and the going is fairly easy, so it's more a scenic drive than a technical challenge. The river setting is the standout, opening onto big valley views as you head along.

Plenty of spots to pull over for lunch or to pitch up for the night, so it works for a relaxed day out or an unhurried trip into one of the more isolated corners of the country. There are no facilities once you leave, so come prepared and carry everything you need.
