4WD track in the Otago region
Hut Creek is a rocky, remote 4WD track through inland Otago tussock country, dropping down to a basic backcountry hut that marks the end of the line.
Up in the inland tussock ranges, this rocky little track drops down to Hut Creek Hut, a simple backcountry shelter. It carries a genuine remote feel, with the quiet open country that's typical of this part of the world.
The going is slow over uneven, stony ground, so allow plenty of time for the run in and out rather than rushing it. It's bumpy work, but the hut at the bottom makes a good turnaround point once you've earned it.
The hut is basic, a no-frills shelter rather than a developed campsite, so come prepared and self-sufficient. Beyond it the land turns private with no public access, so the hut marks the end of the line.
The track is shut from 30 April and reopens 25 October, so plan your visit for the open season.
