Hut Creek

4WD track in the Otago region

Hut Creek is a rocky, slow-going 4WD track in the Otago ranges, leading to a basic backcountry hut amid quiet inland tussock scenery.

A rocky, bumpy 4WD track in the Otago ranges that leads down to Hut Creek Hut, a simple backcountry outpost. The route carries a remote feel, with the quiet tussock ranges scenery typical of inland Otago.

The going is slow over uneven, stony terrain, so allow plenty of time for the trip in and out rather than rushing it. The track rewards the effort once you reach the hut, which makes a worthwhile turnaround point.

The hut itself is basic, a no-frills shelter rather than a developed campsite, so come prepared and self-sufficient. Note that beyond the hut the land becomes private with no public access, so the hut marks the end of the line.

This track sits within a seasonal closure period, shut from 30 April and reopening 25 October, so plan your visit during the open season.
