4WD track in the Auckland region
Hull Road near Waitoki, Auckland, is a short but genuinely tough clay-based 4WD route with steep ruts, closed over winter to keep the locals onside.
Short, sharp, and a lot tougher than the length suggests. This little run between Kahikatea Flat Rd and Austin Rd near Waitoki, west of Silverdale, is an undeveloped, unmaintained route through farmland and bush. Locals have tried to shut access in the past, so it's closed over winter to avoid disturbing the neighbours and reopens in spring.
It's clay based with some grass sections. In the dry, the constant ruts and steep climbs and descents make it an intermediate challenge. In winter it'd be experts only, if not flat out impassable. You get climbs and descents from either end, a decent pull heading south, and coming in from Austin Rd you're straight into ruts and an undulating uphill bit that varies by at least a vertical metre.
Don't let the distance fool you. This one has caught out vehicles, with some parties reporting long, hard runs and minor damage. Plan around the seasonal closure and respect the locals' wishes when access is open.
