Explore the stunning Hopkins Valley in Canterbury! A slow, bump slog up the valley takes you to some amazing backcountry huts with stunning views. This is a classic braided-river-bed track, with huts dotted along either side of the river, leading out to the middle of nowhere. The drive in to Monument Hut is generally easy to medium going, but expect multiple deep river crossings along the way — water can splash over your bonnet, so a snorkel is wise. The section past Red Hut becomes more technical and isn't suited to a stock 4WD without extra clearance. Low tyre pressures will help smooth out the ride. River levels change fast, so the map line may not be 100% and conditions vary trip to trip — best tackled with more than one vehicle if it's your first time. Remember to stay on the track and avoid driving in the Huxley Valley or beyond the Elcho Stream in the upper valley — this is a spot we want to keep open for years to come.
