A short but spectacular drive on Banks Peninsula in Canterbury, reached from Akaroa. The road climbs steeply from sea level to around 780m, rewarding you with stunning views before an intersection splits toward the lighthouse road and Flea Bay. Flea Bay drops back down to sea level at a fishing reserve, while the lighthouse road leads to a superb viewpoint over the coast and old remains worth exploring.

The route is well-maintained gravel, but steep and narrow — a one-lane road that can get tricky if you meet oncoming vehicles, and one that gives your brakes a good workout. The peak itself is a great spot to stop for photos.

The final stretch to the lighthouse is gated due to unstable track conditions, so the last 200m is on foot — don't be put off, the short walk to the viewpoint is well worth it. Consistently rated highly by visitors for its beautiful scenery at both ends.
