Deep in the Mavora Lakes 4WD area, this rough run threads out to Forks Hut through rugged backcountry. Dense wild Irishman scrub crowds in close, with big open lakes country all around.

Figure on a slow, bumpy couple of hours that'll give you and the truck a proper workout. The scrub presses in tight enough to leave a few scratches down the sides, and there's a small creek crossing with large rocks to pick your way over. Forks Hut sits at the end, a bit more weathered than the two huts you pass earlier, but the visitor book is worth a read for a laugh.

You'll need to collect a key from DOC to get into the Mavora Lakes 4WD area before heading in. Hard grade, and best not tackled alone given the challenges, so come prepared for a genuinely tough, jolting drive through scrub and rock.
