A rough, hard-grade 4WD track out to Forks Hut, in the Mavora Lakes 4WD area of Otago. Best not tackled alone due to the challenges along the way. It's a slow, bumpy ride of roughly two hours, threading through dense wild Irishman scrub that crowds the route and will happily add a custom paint job of scratches to your vehicle. Expect a small creek crossing with large rocks to pick your way over. Forks Hut sits at the end of the track and is more weathered than the two huts you'll pass earlier on the route, but the visitor book is worth a read for a laugh. You'll need to collect a key from DOC to access the Mavora Lakes 4WD area before heading in. Come prepared for a genuinely tough, jolting drive through rugged backcountry scrub and rock.
