A handy shortcut between Kaitaia and Mangamuka, this is the shortest formed-road alternative to State Highway 1. The drive runs through native bush and open farmland, with a few sections nicely closed in by forest.

Up the northern end the road follows a stream, and there's a waterhole right beside it that's good for a cool off on a hot day. The road is narrow and winding, so keep an eye out for oncoming traffic, but it's not difficult otherwise.

Surface is gravel in places with a few rougher spots where the road's slipped, though nothing that'll put you off a relaxed cruise. A pleasant, scenic detour off the highway.
