Fern Flat Road is the shortest formed-road alternative to State Highway 1, connecting Kaitaia to Mangamuka. The drive is enjoyable, with sections of the road beautifully enclosed by forest. At the northern end, the road follows a stream, providing access to a waterhole right beside it—perfect for a refreshing break on a hot day. As it is narrow and winding, there is the danger of oncoming traffic, although not challenging in any other way.
