East Manuherikia

4WD track in the Otago region

East Manuherikia is a Hard-graded Otago 4WD route through the Oteake Conservation Area, with river crossings, deep ruts and big high-country views.

(3)

Up in the Oteake Conservation Area, this well-marked route runs through a beautiful Central Otago valley. You can tackle it from the Ranfurly side or link it with the West branch via Omarama, and plenty of other trails crisscross the area if you feel like exploring further. A popular option is doing a loop with the West branch, entering and exiting from Omarama.

The driving is challenging, often graded Hard. Expect multiple river crossings on both branches that can get treacherous at high water, along with muddy sections and deep ruts towards the middle, and steep, loose, shaley climbs and descents. The high points reward you with sweeping views, and snow is possible up top even outside winter.

Allow a few hours and take your time over the rougher sections. The West branch has the option of an overnight at Boundary Creek Hut. This is a seasonal route, closing 1 May and reopening 24 October. A well-regarded drive worth coming back for.
