4WD track in the Northland region
East Beach is a classic Far North coastal drive on bright white sand, tide-dependent and crossing private land, suited to drivers who do their homework.
East Beach is a spectacular Far North beach run on bright white sand, one of Northland's classic coastal drives. The route follows an open stretch of beach with big coastal views, easy going for the most part though you'll strike soft spots in places, particularly through the warmer summer months when the sand dries out.
Tides are the big factor here. The beach becomes impassable at high tide, so plan your run around the low and check the tables before you head out. It's an out-and-back trip, so once you reach the headland you'll turn around and return the way you came.
The entrance to the beach crosses private land, so stick strictly to the road and respect the landowners. Access through the private entrance road has been contested in the past, so it's worth researching current access arrangements before you go. A rewarding, scenic drive for those who do their homework.
