Coal Pit Road climbs to Coal Pit Saddle in Otago, near the Gibbston Valley. Historically this was a hard, rutty and boggy ascent that turned back many vehicles, but the route was dozed and graded in late 2024 and has since been realigned and graded to gravel-road standard in places.

These days it rates as a medium drive, with the steep climb being the main challenge rather than technical terrain. Some drivers have even reported standard SUVs reaching the top. The return trip comes in comfortably under two hours, making it an achievable half-day outing.

The reward is the scenery: sweeping views back over the Gibbston Valley from the saddle, well worth the effort. Conditions can still vary with the weather, so check the recent comments before you go and bring a vehicle suited to a steep gravel climb. While much easier than it once was, the views from the top remain the standout reason to make the trip.
