4WD track in the Canterbury region
Clarence Reserve (North) is a remote Canterbury high-country route through the Seaward Kaikoura Range, with river fords and big views for capable 4WDs.
Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Clarence offers a remote adventure through vast, rugged high country straddling the Seaward Kaikoura Range in inland Canterbury. The road is closed to vehicles over the winter months (1 May to 25 October).
With amazing views, awesome river and stream crossings and access into a truly remote area, the Clarence Valley delivers everything you want from a backcountry trip. The section between the Kahutara gate and Quail Flat is 30 km and takes a minimum of two hours. The road is steep, rough and narrow in places, with several fords. Slips and floods are common, so a safe passage can never be guaranteed.
Keep vehicles to the formed track, leave gates as you find them, and avoid disrupting farm operations or stock. Arrange access by contacting Colin Nimmo of Muzzle Station on +64 3 319 5791 or [email protected]. A road maintenance fee is charged for motorised vehicles.
Drivers rate this a hard but hugely rewarding route, and many call it their favourite side of the valley.
