A slow, steep and rocky route linking the Nevis Valley with Cromwell and Bannockburn, in Otago's historic Carricktown goldfields. It's a low-range crawl whichever way you tackle it — a technical descent heading down, or a tougher climb heading up. Expect a rutted, bumpy and rocky track where clearance and a careful line help you avoid rock damage underneath; drop tyre pressures and take it easy. The reward is stunning views over Cromwell and a chance to explore an old gold mining area, including the cool old water wheel reachable by a short walk. Look out for relics of the diggings, old stock watering dams and water channels carved into the hillside, and you may even spot a native falcon. Stay on the track and take care if on foot — there are old unmarked mine shafts around the place. Makes a great loop or a fitting end to a Nevis trip, with sights worth pausing for along the way.
