4WD track in the Otago region
Carricktown is a steep, rocky low-range crawl through old Otago goldfields, linking the Nevis Valley to Cromwell with big views and gold relics.
A slow, steep and rocky run through the historic Carricktown goldfields, linking the Nevis Valley with Cromwell and Bannockburn. Many drive it one-way down from Duffers Saddle, or tackle it as a loop to pop into the Nevis and back.
It's a low-range crawl whichever way you go, a technical descent heading down or a tougher climb heading up. The track is rutted, bumpy and rocky, so clearance and a careful line help you avoid bashing rocks underneath. Drop your tyre pressures to around 20 psi, use low range and take it slow. Some lift and a spotter could help on the harder sections. After Carricktown itself, stay to the right.
The payoff is big views over Cromwell and an old gold mining area to poke around. There's a cool old water wheel a short walk off the track, along with stock watering dams and water channels carved into the hillside. You might spot a native falcon too. Keep to the track and watch your step on foot, there are old unmarked mine shafts about. Good way to finish off a Nevis trip.
