4WD track in the Otago region
Cardrona Ski Field road in Otago is an easy, well-formed climb above the Cardrona Valley with big alpine views, suited to most capable vehicles.
A well-formed access road climbs high into the hills above the Cardrona Valley, the run of country between Wanaka and Queenstown. It's less a true 4WD challenge and more a steady, winding grind up the slopes, with the views opening up the higher you get. By the time you reach the top you're looking out over big alpine panoramas and the valley well below.
This is a working ski field road, so it can be closed at any stage and gets busy through winter, when chains or 4WD may be needed for the snow. Take your time on the climb, watch for oncoming traffic on the tighter sections, and pull over at the lookouts to take it in.
An easy-going scenic drive that suits most capable vehicles. You get the big alpine views without needing any technical off-road skills.
