4WD track in the Canterbury region
Black Forest Station is an easy, well-maintained Canterbury 4WD track above Lake Benmore with sweeping Mackenzie Country lake views, by permission for $20.
Up in the Mackenzie Country, this easy run climbs and traverses the hills above Lake Benmore. The big draw is the scenery, with sweeping views over the lake that make for a good picnic stop.
It's a scenic cruise rather than a technical challenge. The surface is excellent and the grade is easy, so it suits relaxed days out and anyone heading south after a worthwhile detour. Most folk recommend running it from the station side through to the Benmore dam.
The track crosses two private stations, so you'll need to arrange permission a few days ahead and pay a $20 per vehicle fee. Access is quick and easy to sort, and the station folk are welcoming. With its great surface, lake outlooks and friendly access, it's widely rated as one of the best tracks around. Allow a few hours to take it at an unhurried pace.
