4WD track in the Canterbury region
This easy coastal run sits on the Canterbury coast near Amberley, reached from SH1 north of Christchurch. Head along a simple gravel(ish) track before dropping onto the beach. Stay below the high tide line and off the dunes, then enjoy a cruise down the sand. Being a beach, it changes constantly and can be pretty soft, so come prepared. Along the way there are a couple of tracks and a few river crossings to negotiate, and while some of the accesses look easy, watch for a silty base that can sneak up on you. There's plenty of room to head away from the beach and find a spot to stop for a BBQ. From here you can carry on toward Leithfield for a cold drink, then push further to the Balcairn overbridge and beyond, weather depending. A relaxed, scenic drive with a genuine seaside feel.
