Amberley Beach

4WD track in the Canterbury region

Amberley Beach is an easy Canterbury coastal run off SH1, with sand driving, river crossings and silty accesses to watch for in poor weather.

An easy coastal run reached off SH1 north of Christchurch, near Amberley. A simple gravel-ish track drops you down onto the sand, where you can cruise along with a proper seaside feel.

Being a beach, it shifts constantly and can get pretty soft, so come prepared. Stay below the high tide line and off the dunes. There are a couple of tracks and a few river crossings to sort out along the way, and while some of the accesses look easy, watch for a silty base that can sneak up on you.

Plenty of room to head away from the beach and find a spot for a BBQ. From here you can carry on toward Leithfield for a cold drink, then push further to the Balcairn overbridge and beyond, weather depending. A relaxed, scenic drive.
