4WD track in the Otago region
Ahuriri River valley is a stunning Otago high-country track in Ahuriri Conservation Park, with mountain views, fishing and a base hut, doable in a stock 4x4.
Tucked into Otago's Ahuriri Conservation Park, this is one of the country's most stunning valley tracks, taking you right up amongst the mountains. In dry conditions a two-wheel drive vehicle can reach the conservation park boundary, but a four-wheel drive is needed from there to the car park at the road end.
The route passes Ahuriri Base Hut on the way in, a great spot to overnight before tramping further up the valley toward the Dingle Burn. Along the way you'll be treated to sweeping mountain views, Horseshoe Lagoon, and excellent fishing in the river. Expect a gravel and dirt route with potholes that become more pronounced past the Ben Avon turn-off, and rougher going the further in you travel.
The track is generally very doable in a stock factory 4x4. Please stick to the marked route and don't venture onto the private land of the station. A genuinely beautiful drive into remote high-country surroundings.
