309 Road

4WD track in the Bay of Plenty region

(9)

Famous for its 309 corners (yes, someone actually counted), the 309 Road is a scenic route that crosses the Coromandel Peninsula, offering a mix of history, natural beauty, and adventure. This well-formed gravel road provides a glimpse into the Coromandel's lush native forests, quirky attractions, and tranquil streams, making it a must-do for anyone exploring the area.

The road is generally well-graded and suitable for most vehicles, though care should be taken in wet conditions as it can become slippery. Along the way you'll be surrounded by towering kauri trees, fern-filled gullies, and peaceful streams. There's plenty to stop and explore: a lovely kauri grove walk, Waiau Falls with its swimming holes at both ends of the road, the Castle Rock forestry road off near The Waterworks cafe, and Stuart's famous wild pigs (please don't feed them). It makes a great alternative to the Whitianga highway, and is well worth tackling as an unhurried day trip with the family rather than a quick crossing.
