Tucked into the Mount Thomas Forest Conservation Area in Canterbury, Wooded Gully sits beside a stream below the tracks leading up to Mt Thomas. It's a spacious, well-liked spot with a large open area offering views over the Canterbury plains, plus more sheltered sites tucked down by the water. The constant sound of running water makes for a soothing, if occasionally noisy, night's sleep. Facilities are clean and tidy, with flush toilets and tap water (untreated, so boil before use), and the site is wheelchair accessible with assistance. Tent and non-powered sites are available, and it's dog friendly. The hiking track beside the campsite is a pretty walk, making this a handy base for exploring on foot. It also works well as a stopover before or after a Lees Valley trip. The riverside spots are the pick of the bunch, so it pays to arrive early to claim one. Pack bug repellent for your stay.
