Tucked beside the surf beach at Pukatea/Whites Bay in the Marlborough Sounds, this is a well-liked beachside campsite with lovely scenery and an easygoing seaside feel. There are multiple non-powered spots to park up or pitch a tent, with flush toilets, cold showers and tap water (untreated, so boil before use). The setting suits a range of activities, with walking, fishing, swimming and kayaking all on offer, and a surf lifesaving club right by the beach. A short 30-second walk leads to an impressive glow worm wall, a real highlight after dark. It makes a convenient overnight stop, sitting about 25 minutes from the ferry, so it's handy for travellers heading to or from Picton. Keep in mind that mobile reception can be patchy, and the gates are locked overnight for camper safety, so plan your comings and goings accordingly.
