Campsite in the Waikato region
Waipakihi Campsite is a bush-fringed riverside camp off the Desert Road in the Waikato, no facilities and a genuinely tough 4x4-only access track.
A peaceful riverside spot ringed by bush, tucked beside the Waipakihi River off the Desert Road. You can pitch right next to the water, and it's the setting that keeps people coming back. Plenty rate it as one of the best camps around once they've made the effort to get in.
There are no facilities, so come fully self-sufficient and prepared to pack everything out. The catch is the access. The entrance off Waipakihi Road is tough going and a 4x4 is essential, with a rough, challenging track in that takes some careful line choice.
Because of that, it's worth heading in with mates in more than one vehicle rather than tackling it solo. Give this one the respect it deserves and it'll stay worth the effort for the next crew.
